We will be lighting the Advent candle of love this week during our regular worship services, as we continue to prepare for the coming of Christmas (the celebration of Christ's birth) and our Lord's coming once again. Our doors are always open to all, but a special invitation is extended to you and your family to join us this week at any of our Christmas Eve Services as we worship our Lord.

Christmas Caroling Thanks
Thanks to everyone who took time from their busy schedule to bring a little Christmas cheer to the residents at Colonial Manor in Amana. They are always so appreciative. Next year we will be caroling at the Keystone nursing home, as we alternate years.

Our work trip to Bidwell/Riverside is fast approaching. The day to head for Des Moines is this Thursday, October 22. We usually plan on arriving at Bidwell at 9 a.m. Cars will leave the Norway church at 7:00 a.m. Anyone wishing a ride can come and meet with us at that time. There are cars leaving the other churches also. We will all meet at Bidwell. Look forward to a fun and rewarding day.

Thanksgiving Ingathering will be here before we know it. In Norway, little fleece sweaters have been constructed for missions. Donations are still being taken for the cost of the little gripper snaps. The cost is about $20.00 for 24 sweaters. Contributions are greatly appreciated. These sweaters do not require extra shipping and are credited at $6.00 each.

Also, 25 school kits have been filled with the help of the church youth. The cost of these kits will be $3 plus $2 shipping for each. Your $5 donation will be accepted until Nov.7th. Checks should be made payable to Dorothy Blackburn. Mission credit for these will be $11.00. Purchased kits will be placed near the altar with other Ingathering items to be dedicated on the Sunday before the Ingathering.

COMING EVENTS:
The Elberon United Methodist Church will be celebrating 125 years September 19th-20th.
Festivities will start on Saturday with a parade at 3:00pm, old time games at 4:00pm, Ice Cream social at 5:00pm. and a concert by River's Voice (Richard and Trish Bruxvoort-Colligan) beginning at 6:00pm. Sunday’s activities include a buckwheat breakfast at 8:30am, worship service at 10:30am., lunch at 12:00pm with a program at 1:30pm. Everyone in the parish is invited to attend. This summer, Matthew 25 Ministry of Cedar Rapids is doing all they can to rebuild community in the Taylor and Time Check Neighborhoods. One part of this is having a place where people can gather and eat each Monday-Friday. The Neighborhood Meals program is open to everyone who is hungry for food or community, from 12pm-1pm. They are especially seeking to make sure each kid in the neighborhood has a well balanced lunch and a place to see their friends this summer. If you or someone you know is interested in joining them for this free lunch during the summer, just show up at Trinity United Methodist Church, located at 400 3rd Ave. SW.
If you would like to volunteer to help serve Neighborhood Meals this summer, you can see available days by visiting their website at www.hub25.org and clicking on the Volunteer Info tab. Greetings to everyone from the communities here at the Anamosa State Penitentiary Chapel.
I write to you today to make known a need among us here among the Christian communities of the chapel.
We have given away about 96 to 120 bibles in the past several months and our supply for our incoming inmates is growing very low. In fact we have just over 20 at this time..…
They do need to be new books, sent from the supplier OR purchased by the chapel through our business office. This is to stay in compliance with Iowa DOC policy.
The greatest need we have is for the following translations:

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING:

The 2009 Lenten Offering of $458.16 ($114.54 for each church) collected at the Sunday evening Lenten services has been sent to UMCOR for the Material Resource Ministry, Advance #901440.
In 1992 , UMCOR began a program of “In Kind” resourcing to provide critically needed items to areas of the world that had been impacted by disaster. Today, emergency and disaster relief supplies are collected, verified and distributed from the UMCOR Depot in Louisiana to victims in the United States and around the world. This Advance is used to purchase emergency response supplies as needed.

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING:
Meals for Flood Recovery Work Teams
Six people from different churches of our parish prepared and served breakfast on Thursday and Friday, April 16 and 17 at Marion First UMC. The work team served was an Ecumenical group of 12-15 people from different Boone, IA churches.

Plans have been made to serve breakfast on Thursday, April 30 and dinner on Friday, May 1 and possibly other times in May and during the summer with dates yet to be determined. Anyone interested in helping should contact Don Logan at 228-8565. The hope is to serve 2 or more meals on a weekly basis during the summer. Those wishing to contribute monetarily to purchase food can contact Don or pastors or send to the parish office (PO Box 337, Van Horne, IA 52346). Please make sure to designate what contribution is for.

Making Cards of Peace
this Wednesday, 6:30 P.M. in Salem Hall. There is something for everyone to do. The more the merrier!

The Annual Parish Men’s and Women’s Banquets have been scheduled.

At Salem our MidUMYF/Confirmation group will be serving a light meal at 6:00 P.M. A service will follow at 7:00 P.M. Jill Sanders our District Field Outreach Minister will speak.
